    Mobiles and mobility: The Effect of Mobile Phones on Migration in Niger

    Labor markets in developing countries are subject to a high degree of frictions. We report the results from a randomized evaluation of an adult education program (Project ABC) in Niger, in which students learned how to use simple mobile phones as part of a literacy and numeracy class. Overall, our preliminary results suggest that access to this technology substantially influenced seasonal migration in Niger, increasing the likelihood of migration by at least one household member by 7 percentage points and the number of households' members engaging in seasonal migration. Evidence suggests that there are some heterogeneous impacts of the program, with a higher probability of a household member migrating in one region. These effects do not appear to be driven by differences in observable characteristics of households or differential effects of drought during the survey period. Rather we posit that they are largely explained by the effectiveness of mobile phones as a search technology: Students in ABC villages used mobile phones in more active ways and communicated more with migrants within Niger. These initial results suggest that simple and cheap information technology can be harnessed to affect labor mobility among rural populations. --

    Understanding Human Preferences for Summary Designs in Online Debates Domain

    Research on automatic text summarization has primarily focused on summarizing news, web pages, scientific papers, etc. While in some of these text genres, it is intuitively clear what constitutes a good summary, the issue is much less clear cut in social media scenarios like online debates, product reviews, etc., where summaries can be presented in many ways. As yet, there is no analysis about which summary representation is favored by readers. In this work, we empirically analyze this question and elicit readers’ preferences for the different designs of summaries for online debates. Seven possible summary designs in total were presented to 60 participants via an online study. Participants were asked to read and assign preference scores to each summary design. The results indicated that the combination of Chart Summary and Side-By-Side Summary is the most preferred summary design. This finding is important for future work in automatic text summarization of online debates

    Debate summarization is one of the novel and challenging research areas in automatic text summarization which has been largely unexplored. In this paper, we develop a debate summarization pipeline to summarize key topics which are discussed or argued in the two opposing sides of online debates. We view that the generation of debate summaries can be achieved by clustering, cluster labeling, and visualization. In our work, we investigate two different clustering approaches for the generation of the summaries. In the first approach, we generate the summaries by applying purely term-based clustering and cluster labeling. The second approach makes use of X-means for clustering and Mutual Information for labeling the clusters. Both approaches are driven by ontologies. We visualize the results using bar charts. We think that our results are a smooth entry for users aiming to receive the first impression about what is discussed within a debate topic containing waste number of argumentations

    Simple open stance classification for rumour analysis

    Stance classification determines the attitude, or stance, in a (typically short) text. The task has powerful applications, such as the detection of fake news or the automatic extraction of attitudes toward entities or events in the media. This paper describes a surprisingly simple and efficient classification approach to open stance classification in Twitter, for rumour and veracity classification. The approach profits from a novel set of automatically identifiable problem-specific features, which significantly boost classifier accuracy and achieve above state-of-the-art results on recent benchmark datasets. This calls into question the value of using complex sophisticated models for stance classification without first doing informed feature extraction

    An extensible multilingual open source lemmatizer

    We present GATE DictLemmatizer, a multilingual open source lemmatizer for the GATE NLP framework that currently supports English, German, Italian, French, Dutch, and Spanish, and is easily extensible to other languages. The software is freely available under the LGPL license. The lemmatization is based on the Helsinki Finite-State Transducer Technology (HFST) and lemma dictionaries automatically created from Wiktionary. We evaluate the performance of the lemmatizers against TreeTagger, which is only freely available for research purposes. Our evaluation shows that DictLemmatizer achieves similar or even better results than TreeTagger for languages where there is support from HFST. The performance drops when there is no support from HFST and the entire lemmatization process is based on lemma dictionaries. However, the results are still satisfactory given the fact that DictLemmatizer isopen-source and can be easily extended to other languages. The software for extending the lemmatizer by creating word lists from Wiktionary dictionaries is also freely available as open-source software

    Viscous stabilization of 2D drainage displacements with trapping

    We investigate the stabilization mechanisms due to viscous forces in the invasion front during drainage displacement in two-dimensional porous media using a network simulator. We find that in horizontal displacement the capillary pressure difference between two different points along the front varies almost linearly as function of height separation in the direction of the displacement. The numerical result supports arguments taking into account the loopless displacement pattern where nonwetting fluid flow in separate strands (paths). As a consequence, we show that existing theories developed for viscous stabilization, are not compatible with drainage when loopless strands dominate the displacement process.Comment: The manuscript has been substantially revised. It observes that corporate social responsibility programs of cooperative societies have not been adequately reported and emphasized by researchers cum development experts. It amplifies available corporate social responsibility platforms by cooperative societies that have contributed significantly at fast-tracking developments in rural level across Africa. It concludes by identifying specific corporate social responsibility interventions for rural development across Africa through cooperative societies.     Structural Changes of Yellow Cameleon Domains Observed by Quantitative FRET Analysis and Polarized Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy

    Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) is a widely used method for monitoring interactions between or within biological macromolecules conjugated with suitable donor-acceptor pairs. Donor fluorescence lifetimes in absence and presence of acceptor molecules are often measured for the observation of FRET. However, these lifetimes may originate from interacting and noninteracting molecules, which hampers quantitative interpretation of FRET data. We describe a methodology for the detection of FRET that monitors the rise time of acceptor fluorescence on donor excitation thereby detecting only those molecules undergoing FRET. The large advantage of this method, as compared to donor fluorescence quenching method used more commonly, is that the transfer rate of FRET can be determined accurately even in cases where the FRET efficiencies approach 100% yielding highly quenched donor fluorescence. Subsequently, the relative orientation between donor and acceptor chromophores is obtained from time-dependent fluorescence anisotropy measurements carried out under identical conditions of donor excitation and acceptor detection. The FRET based calcium sensor Yellow Cameleon 3.60 (YC3.60) was used because it changes its conformation on calcium binding, thereby increasing the FRET efficiency. After mapping distances and orientation angles between the FRET moieties in YC3.60, cartoon models of this FRET sensor with and without calcium could be created. Independent support for these representations came from experiments where the hydrodynamic properties of YC3.60 under ensemble and single-molecule conditions on selective excitation of the acceptor were determined. From rotational diffusion times as found by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy and consistently by fluorescence anisotropy decay analysis it could be concluded that the open structure (without calcium) is flexible as opposed to the rather rigid closed conformation.     Automatic summarization of reader comments in on-line news is a challenging but clearly useful task. Work to date has produced extractive summaries using well-known techniques from other areas of NLP. But do users really want these, and do they support users in realistic tasks? We specify an alternative summary type for reader comments, based on the notions of issues and viewpoints, and demonstrate our user interface to present it. An evaluation to assess how well summarization systems support users in time-limited tasks (identifying issues and characterizing opinions) gives good results for this prototype
